Traveling with furry friends is becoming more popular these days, and frequent fliers want to know that when they bring their best friend on a trip they’ll both be comfortable. Though not all airlines allow pets in plane cabins, those who do generally only allow certain types of animals. They are typically required to be under 20 pounds, including the weight of their carrier, and are required to remain under the seat for the duration of the flight.
Travel + Leisure indicates that fliers who are bringing pets must book their pets in advance as space is limited. European airlines that allow pets in their cabins include: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, Vueling, Aegean Airlines, Iberia, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways.
In the U.S., airline carriers also maintain certain guidelines for doggy fliers, T+L reports. Delta requires that “small dogs, cats, and household birds that meet the age, health, size and kennel requirements can travel in the cabin for a one-way fee that is collected at check-in.” Size requirements are similar to those required by European airlines, and animals must be at least eight weeks old. Other airlines offering pet accommodations in aircraft cabins include American and United Airlines.
According to Chewy, in recent years some airlines have launched pet-friendly campaigns, hoping to attract travelers with furry friends to book more flights and bring their pets along. Alaska Airlines’ Fur-st Class campaign recapped the carrier’s pet policies, maintaining a $100 fee for those who want to bring their pet along in the aircraft cabin. This includes small dogs, cats, and domesticated rabbits. JetBlue’s JetPaws campaign offered similar parameters.
Traveling with pets is now more a part of the vacation experience than ever before according to NBC News. Hotels and lodgings are also offering pet-friendly accommodations, so that you can ditch the dog-sitter and make memories with your pets.
