EDGEWATER BEACH HOTEL – NAPLES, FLORIDA
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Florida, exploring smaller cities, and the older I get, the more I appreciate community-sized LGBTQ scenes, as well as off-the-radar, gay-friendly hotels, such as the all-suite, beachfront Edgewater Beach Hotel, part of Opal Collection, in Naples. What attracted me to Edgewater isn’t only the fact the hotel is directly on the beach, but so too are a small number of suites, where a sliding glass door is all that separates you from the sugary white sand—a rarity in Florida. My One-bedroom King Suite with Lanai was equipped with a full kitchen, living area, and a separate bedroom. It felt more residential than a hotel, which I appreciated, and while I love the luxury of walking straight to the ocean, tower suites are also worth noting with their expansive views. As a Georgian, I tapped into my Southern roots here, as most visitors were from the Southern region. Edgewater Beach was a rare find since Opal Collection isn’t nationally known, and it’s more casual than the buttoned-up properties I find myself booking. This allowed me to let my hair down and lounge in the private beach chairs, enjoy the delicious shrimp tacos, and fully relax by doing nothing at all. opalcollection.com/edgewater

ROSEWOOD LE GUANAHANI – SAINT-BARTHÉLEMY, FRENCH WEST INDIES
One of our all-time favorite Caribbean getaways is the Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth. Set on 18 lush, secluded acres on its own private peninsula, this resort is the ultimate destination for a romantic getaway by the sea. Our home-away-from-home was the two-bedroom Serenity Suite. Nestled in the upper part of the resort’s hillside, there are amazing views of the lagoon and ocean from an expansive covered terrace and sun deck. A spacious living room features a sofa bed, dining table, and wet bar. The king-bedded main bedroom has a bathroom with a shower and bathtub. There are also two entrances that provide access to the suite, which also includes a large private pool. After a day relaxing at the beach, exploring the island, or shopping for unique local products, head back to the resort and enjoy the properties two pools, fitness center, and the Sense Spa, where the St. Barth Sensory Experience is a must. This uniquely customized treatment focuses on releasing muscular tension, fatigue and stress. The deep tissue massage is performed with locally sourced aromatherapy oils, including lime, basil, and pimento leaf, to improve energy flow around the body and provide relief from stiffness and pain. When it comes time to eat, Beach House St. Barth, located directly on the beach overlooking the turquoise water of the Caribbean, is the place to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. The cuisine celebrates the island’s unique flavors and European sensibility with delicious mezze-inspired dishes that create an immersive multi-sensory experience. rosewoodhotels.com
CASITA MIA DE MITA – PUNTA MITA, MEXICO
Formerly a hacienda, the beachfront, eight-suite Casita Mia de Mita is truly one of a kind. It’s quite intimate. You feel like you have the entire property to yourself, and the wonderful staff who address you like a friend rather than a guest elevates the experience. All suites offer balconies facing the sea, and the thatch-roof and colorful textiles and carefully selected antiques and furnishings, including whimsical Botello paintings I love, offer a no-frills, Mexican flair. It doesn’t hurt to have four post beds, oversized bathrooms with tiled sinks and rain showers, a fitness center, and all-glass wine tasting room. It’s one of few villas I’ve experienced that is not only on the beach, but mere steps from the ocean. The crashing waves lull you to sleep at night and give an enormous sense of peace during the day. The intimate heated pool (with swim-up bar) in the heart of the property is surrounded by swaying palms and beautiful flora, with a handful of private cabanas snuggling the beach. I’ve met many like-minded travelers, who also have a nose for hidden hotel gems, while enjoying meals served beachside here (all gourmet meals are homemade, such as their exceptional chicken mole). Also, the property is so far removed from the beaten path that the stargazing is exceptional. casitamiademita.com
MANDARIN ORIENTAL – MILAN, ITALY
Attracting more than 10 million visitors annually from around the world, Milan is a metropolis that beckons people with an opportunity to experience exciting art, culture, food, and fashion. Whether you come here for business or pleasure, one of the best choices for accommodations is the Mandarin Oriental, Milan. Our Mandarin Room featured a color palette of beige and aubergine in an understated Milanese style. High speed WiFi and a large desk for working complements the custom-made furnishings, showcasing beautiful, curved headboards and sofas. The large bathroom with dual vanities, a large tub, and a walk-in shower was great for two guys trying to get ready in the morning. Every room has large windows, but make sure to reserve one on the top floors that offer views towards the spires of the Duomo, and a balcony or terrace. We began each day with a swim in the beautiful indoor pool. The pool is available by appointment only to limit the number of people using the facilities at any one time. After our swim, we headed for the dining room to enjoy their expansive breakfast and made to order egg dishes. Choose the Buffet, American, or Oriental Breakfast, as well as a great selection of a la carte items. The Mandarin Oriental, Milan is located just a couple of blocks from the world-famous La Scala opera house, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an extravagant 19th-century glass-topped, barrel-vaulted arcade that serves as a lively and colorful shopping mall, and the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest and most impressive Catholic churches in the world. Our go to place for martinis and dinner was the Mandarin Garden. Nestled in the heart of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, and featuring a beautiful courtyard, this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy drinks and some wonderful food at any time of day. Open from early morning to late at night, it provides an ideal combination of lush plant life, Italian design, and subtle Oriental touches. This secret garden, located right in the center of the city, is a great place to host business associates, or to savor a romantic meal with someone special. mandarinoriental.com/en/milan
