With travel prices soaring this summer due to increases in airfare and general inflation, it may not be the best time to travel to some of your favorite European destinations, but an affordable vacation can still be had in some European countries that have retained their affordability and offer less crowded cities, more authentic cultural experiences, and breathtaking scenery. So ditch your itinerary for Greece or Italy and book a stay in one or multiple of these budget-friendly countries in the Balkans.
Bosnia & Herzegovina
This year Conde Nast Traveler ranked Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina, the top destination in Europe for a city break in 2026. With the nearby Miljacka River and the Dinaric Alps as your backdrop, a stay here will offer not only beautiful cityscape and natural vistas, but a rich experience in food and history. CN Traveler reveres the city for its “unique blend of tradition and modernity” that melds Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman cultural influences. If Croatia is the more affordable Italy, then Bosnia & Herzegovina is the more affordable Croatia.
Albania
While some report Albania remains a hidden gem of Europe, others are reporting the country is steadily becoming overrun by tourists who’ve heard of the country’s unmatched beauty, with sparkling blue waters along its coast, and small towns contrasted with modern cities. Albania is known for its affordability even during peak season. Not only are accommodations here affordable, but dining out is practically better than purchasing weekly groceries.
Montenegro
Montenegro also offers a great experience to budget travelers. Here, if you so desire, you can manage to have a full day of great food, sight seeing and more for around $50-$80. Affordability public transport makes moving about the country easy. Like many of its neighboring countries, Montenegro offers historic walled cities, gorgeous national parks, and a taste of the slow laid-back Mediterranean culture that makes European trips so relaxing.
Slovakia
With architecture evocative of Switzerland or Poland, Slovakia offers a taste of Europe without the financial guilt. Slovakia is best visited in the summer months known for its UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include the awe-inspiring Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, around 712 caves with varying rock formations that you can walk through.
