Taiwan has launched a 6-month remote work visa for travelers who want to play as much as they work this year. With Taiwan’s new 6-month visa, digital nomads hoping to explore a new country need only apply by submitting necessary info including a valid passport, travel itinerary, and any supporting documents related to your purpose of visitation.
U.S. travelers could only enter Taiwan as a tourist or short-term visitor without a visa for up to 90 days prior to the introduction of the new visa. The visa takes effect this month, inviting working travelers to come and set up shop and explore wonderful cities like Taipei or relax in Taiwan’s beautiful mountainous regions and beaches.
The new opportunity is part of President Lai Ching-te’s directives to invest in innovative entrepreneurship. According to Taiwan Today, the government plans to invest around $4.59 billion into these efforts each year.
Lai Ching-te hopes that the new initiative will stimulate more growth for Taiwan’s tourism sector. The Taipei Times reports that the country hopes to receive around 10,000 digital nomads by 2028. The government also hopes that a small percentage of the digital nomads who take advantage of the new visa might stay and continue to support local economies.
Also in Asia last year, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea all began issuing new digital nomad visas with varying time allowances.
