There are over 5,000 art galleries in the United States, including both public and private institutions, featuring exciting exhibitions on fashion, contemporary and modern art, and so much more. Here are five must-see exhibits taking place throughout the USA that are sure to delight art lovers in 2023.

“Simone Leigh,” at the ICA Boston
The first museum retrospective dedicated to artist Simone Leigh will be on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston from April 6 to September 4. The exhibit will contain over 20 years’ worth of ceramic, bronze, and video installations, some of which will also be on display at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, where Leigh represents the United States. Her work focuses on topics surrounding Black femme subjectivity and the agency of women’s bodies. Leigh’s art features techniques and themes commonly seen throughout the African diaspora.

“Georgia O’Keeffe: To See Takes Time,” at MoMA, New York
Best known for her stunning images of flowers, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) also produced a large number of works on paper, experimenting with charcoal, wood, pencil, and other tactile mediums. This exhibit is in conjunction with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and will showcase works from 1915-1918. April 9 to August 12.

“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
The Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibit will showcase the work of Karl Lagerfeld through his time at major fashion houses including Chanel, Prada, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld. Approximately 150 pieces will be on display, along with his sketches that detail his intricate creative process and intimate relationship with his head seamstresses. May 5 to July 16.

“Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape,” at the Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago will be showcasing over 75 works from five different artists, including 25 created by Vincent Van Gogh. Between 1882 and 1890, Vincent van Gogh, along with Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, and Charles Angrand, flocked to villages on the fringes of Paris. These artists found in the changing physical and social landscape a fresh and rich source of creativity. Of Van Gogh’s 25 works, two triptychs will be shown together for the first time. May 14 to September 4.

“Keith Haring: Art is for Everybody,” at The Broad, Los Angeles

The Broad museum in Los Angeles will be hosting its first exhibit of Keith Haring’s work. From May 27 to October 8, view permanent pieces in the gallery’s collection, such as Untitled (1984), as well as works on loan from other institutions, including art and documents from the Keith Haring Institute in New York. In addition, the Shop at the Broad will be transformed, pulling inspiration from Haring’s original storefront, The Pop Shop, once located in the SoHo neighborhood of NYC.
