Maintaining a healthy diet when traveling can be tricky for anyone. Choices at airports are often limited, and finding the best food options while on the go is not always easy. Here are some of the best tips for staying healthy during your vacation.

Keep a stash of airport-friendly snacks.

Start your trip off on the right foot by packing snacks that can travel with you. Most airports allow liquid snacks, like yogurt and squeezable fruit, as long as it’s in a container smaller than 3.4 fluid oz. Other snacks like trail mixes, crackers, and fruit can be packed and transported in individual containers. For something heartier, sandwiches and wraps make great transportable meals, with little prep time.

    Prepare your own meals.

Utilize your accommodation space, especially if it has a kitchenette. Cooking for yourself will not only save you money, but spending time in local grocery stores is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a different culture. Making meals at home is great if you are a vegetarian or vegan, and it also provides an opportunity to share a meal with your new friends.

    Hydrate!

The average person needs between 11 and 15 cups of water a day (2.7 – 3.7 liters). Staying hydrated is not only important for your health and well-being while on vacation, but it can also help you cut down on the urge to snack. Keeping a reusable water bottle on hand is also great for you and the planet when exploring a new destination.

    Sharing is caring.

Many restaurants offer large portions on their dinner menus. When traveling, don’t be afraid to split meals with others, or even take the leftovers home with you. This can help with saving money and also give you an opprontunity to pratice portion control. Additionally, sharing meals with other travelers in your group also provides an opportunity to sample more culinary options.

Commit to eating fruits and vegetables at every meal.

It can be easy to get swept up in indulgent offerings when eating out. But even when traveling, commit to having fruits and vegetables at every meal. Even something as small as an banana can provide you with gut-balancing nutrients as well as energy throughout the day. This will also give you room to explore the local offerings and expand your palate in a different way.

    Plan ahead.

Spend time learning about the food and local dining scene wherever you’re traveling. This can help you make informed decisions on what to choose when dining out. Also, try to avoid tourist traps and make sure the places you dine in have fresh and authentic options. Planning your meals in advance means you can get more detailed information about nutritional information and healthy eating options.
