Traveling with friends and family can be fun, but solo travel can also create lasting memories and a unique sense of self trust and achievement. According to Expedia, bookings for solo trips are increasing around the globe. Expedia compared booking data from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2025 with the same period from 2024 to determine what destinations are on the rise for solo travel. The platform notes increased interest in searches for solo trips in walkable cities, culture-rich capitals, and sunny escapes.
According to Travel + Leisure (T+L) and Expedia, solo travelers in the U.S. are flocking to California, namely to visit San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles. In 2025, San Fran saw a 145% surge in one-person hotel bookings, while L.A. and San Diego saw a 60% leap.
“There is so much to see and do in San Francisco — we have some of the best restaurants, the most beautiful parks, and the most exciting neighborhoods in the country,” said Mayor Daniel Lurie to T+L. “San Francisco is a city on the rise, and I’m thrilled to welcome visitors to the best city in the world.” Despite this, San Fran still ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the country.
Elsewhere in the U.S., Dallas and Washington, D.C. are also seeing increases in solo travel bookings, along with Miami Beach and New York City. “From historic streets to tropical shores, these destinations combine safety, accessibility, and experiences that cater to independent travelers,” Expedia writes.
Also ranking high on the list is Dublin, which both saw 90% increases in bookings. Other honorable mentions seeing popularity amongst solo travelers are Punta Cana, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Honolulu.
