The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) presents “Flower Power,” a multidisciplinary exhibition celebrating florals and their symbolism in culture as they tie us to the natural world. The exhibition opened on May 23 and continues through October 18 in the Bronx, and it’s a perfect way to fill an afternoon, evening, or even weekend as the summer heat hits the streets of New York.
According to NYBG’s site, the exhibition includes a gallery show and garden displays merging vibrant flower shows and monumental installations including paintings, photography and posters from the 1960s and ‘70s. The exhibition even features works from the father of pop art Andy Warhol, and other artists including Milton Glaser, Carlos Irizarry, and Joe Brainard.
The display emphasizes the power of flowers as symbols in society, and as a form of life that spans generations. With site-specific installations in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and its lawn, sculptures, and artist-designed bus displays, viewers are transported to the flower power days. In a time of divisiveness across the U.S., “Flower Power” invites people to unite and embrace nature.
Make your visit even more memorable and see the exhibition’s Liquid Light Shows after hours. On select evenings, live music and colorful visuals curated by the Liquid Light Lab celebrate the sounds of the late ‘60s as colors swirl on the face of the Mertz Library.
Get even more involved as the exhibition hosts a series of rotating activities open to the public. These include drum circles, guided meditations, craft workshops and even a film series.
