If you’re a digital nomad who has set their sights on the Mediterranean you’re in luck because Italy and Turkey now offer digital nomad visas.
In Turkey, the new digital nomad visa is available to citizens between the ages of 21 and 55 in 36 countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and France. Applicants for visas must earn a minimum of $3,000 a month or $36,000 a year. All required documents for this visa can be filed online.
To prove you can make it in Turkey on your own, you must have a college degree, be employed with a company outside of Turkey or prove self-employment, and you must have a passport valid for at least six months following your arrival in the country.
You’re probably lying if you haven’t dreamed of living in Italy at least once in your lifetime, and though it can be nearly impossible to get an Italian work visa, digital nomad visas are now your easiest way in. But don’t get your hopes up yet, Italy is still very picky about who gets a visa. Their applications are apparently only for “highly skilled” non-European Union/European Economic Area citizens.
What does “highly skilled” even mean? According to the Italian government, it’s someone “who carries out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company.”
Italy’s digital nomad visa lasts one year and requires applicants to provide their own health insurance, proof of place to stay, and earnings of $30,000 per year. On top of this, applicants must hold a college degree or professional trade license to obtain the visa. To apply, book an in-person appointment at an Italian consulate in your country of residence. After a year, this visa can be renewed.
