A new bill from the GOP proposes to eliminate dual citizenship amongst American passport holders, forcing U.S. citizens to renounce their citizenship statuses in other countries. The legislation entitled Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 was introduced by Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno in December. If passed, the bill would demand that citizens of the U.S. claim “sole and exclusive allegiance to the United States.” Making those will dual citizenship choose between the U.S. and their other country of residency.
The bill would also require that dual citizens who choose to maintain their U.S. citizenship submit a written renunciation of their other nationality. This would also force U.S. citizens who are hoping to acquire dual citizenship in the future to renounce the U.S.
Though the bill is in early stages of approval, it is still in motion, progressing to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Still GovTrack.us, estimates the bill only has a 7 percent chance of passing in the committee, and an even smaller chance of being enacted at large.
Morena, was a dual citizen once himself, moving to the U.S. from Bogota, Colombia at the age of five. Still he said in a statement when announcing the new bill “one of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so.”
“It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege — and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing.”
