One of the most attractive aspects of moving abroad is the potential to save money on daily living costs. All around the world, expats are enjoying affordable rent, groceries, goods and services, but there are a few places where you’ll have to pay more if you want to live there.
According to Mercer’s 2024 cost-of-living data, the most expensive places for expats to live are Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, with Hong Kong topping the list.
To render these results, Mercer evaluated key factors affecting the world’s economy in recent years, including inflation and exchange-rate fluctuations, heightened economic and geopolitical volatility, housing market prices, increasing transportation costs, and the general increase in the cost of goods and services that make living so expensive.
The report evaluated 226 cities around the world based on the cost of 200 items in each location, including transport, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment, according to CNN.
General living costs in these categories around the world have seemingly skyrocketed in recent years, which Mercer chalks up to soaring housing market and transportation costs.
Some of the other most expensive cities for expats include Basel, Bern, Geneva, London, New York, Los Angeles and Nassau in the Bahamas.
