The Malta Biennale, presented by the MUŻA National Museum of Art in collaboration with Heritage Malta and Arts Council Malta, is an unforgettable celebration of art, heritage, and creativity running now through May 31, 2024. Over 100 acclaimed international and local artists are displaying works at 20 esteemed heritage sites across Malta and Gozo. Mediums exhibited include painting, sculpture, video installation, and more.
The first event of its kind in Malta, it was curated by artistic director Sofia Baldi Pighi and curators Elisa Carollo and Emma Mattei with setup design by Nigel Baldacchino. A central theme of “white sea olive groves” will play out at the biennale’s Main Pavilion through four intertwined sub-themes: Can You Sea?; The Mediterranean as a Political Body; The Counterpower of Piracy; Decolonising Malta – Polyphony is Us; and The Matri-archive of the Mediterranean.
The Main Pavilion will feature works from international artists including Cecilia Vicuña, Ibrahim Mahama, Pedro Reyes, and more along with Maltese-native talents including Austin Camilleri, Raphael Vella, Aaron Bezzina and Anna Calleja. Other pavilions in the biennale are based on culture. Countries represented include Malta, Ukraine, Italy, Austria, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, and China.
This event invites the viewer to enjoy the physical artworks and displays within the greater canvas of a historically, culturally, and architecturally rich city. Malta blends the culture and history of the Mediterranean with that of Africa, making it a must-visit country for history geeks and culture vultures.
