With such close proximity to NYC, the Sullivan Catskills have been upping their game for years in tourism and hospitality. Today, there are many offerings across the region for those hoping to enjoy a weekend away, or a change of pace. Here are some of the best towns to visit for a weekend in the Sullivan Catskills.
Along the Delaware River on the New York-Pennsylvania border, Narrowsburg has morphed into a swanky yet bucolic getaway just a two hour drive from New York City. Here, a beautiful yet compact main street sits overlooking the river and surrounding lush forests. Shop owners here appreciate the town’s natural reprieve from faster paced life, many of whom migrated here from the NYC boroughs over the past couple decades. They now foster an incredible and carefully curated selection of storefronts on main streets in Narrowsburg’s town center. And just outside of town are hiking trails, scenic overlooks, parks and plenty of ways to connect with nature.
Similar to Narrowsburg, and up the river slightly, Callicoon is another adorable small town within close proximity to hiking trails and nature preserves, but it also offers a hearty slice of arts, culture, dining and imbibing experiences. Visit the Seminary Hill Cider house, the sculpture park of artist Forrest Myers, or explore local farmers markets or see a concert at Bethel Woods, the original location of 1969 Woodstock.
This town has only grown in popularity in recent years and has even been featured in Condé Nast Traveler as an upcoming “hotspot” in the Catskills. Plenty of snazzy dining and hotels await visitors hoping for some countryside relaxation here. Pass the afternoon at a local brewery, or explore nearby forests and wilderness areas.
If you stay at this small town’s lovely Kenoza Hall and you’ll barely have to leave the property. While it’s still warm, enjoy an onsite pool, spa, and restaurant where you can make new friends or kick back by yourself or your family and friends. Enjoy yoga and fitness classes during your visiit, grab a drink at the bar, and plan to stay for weekend brunch. Plus, the property overlooks Kenoza Lake, so you’re always in touch with the surrounding nature and views.
